Last month our CEO Matt Mackenzie commissioned a piece of artwork, designed and painted by Susan Lintell. Kingsman’s cheeky monkey sits proudly above the coffee bar at our Osprey House business centre, to help you enjoy your coffee.
So Susan, what inspired you to create the cheeky monkey for our coffee bar?
My first idea was a bag of coffee.
Then, following my meeting with Matt, asking me to design a mural of the rainforest with animals, I thought I’d tie it in with the painting for the coffee area.
My first thought was to look at Fornasetti wallpaper. Some of his designs include monkeys holding cups of coffee. I don’t think that the Fornasetti monkeys look very friendly. So, thinking about Matt’s cheeky face and sense of humour, | painted the first version of cheeky monkey. I thought it was a joke and Matt absolutely loved it! It made us both laugh.
How long does a piece of artwork like this take to complete?
I can’t tell you how long it took. When I’m painting, time disappears. Though, It did take many hours and several days. My objective was to build up layers using gesso to give the monkey’s fur texture. Using a combination of materials, brushes and a palette knife, I used many layers of gesso and acrylic paint.
How does a unique piece like this enhance the Kingsman’s story?
The unique piece enhances the Kingsman story, highlighting the personal connection of Matt and Tachi to animals and the environment, and the Kingsman culture of treating everyone as family and friendliness and laughter, together with the amazing business services. And it makes everyone laugh, sparking conversation and connection in the coffee area.
If you had to create your own illustration for yourself, what would it be?
I have many illustrations of myself, but my favourite is to convey my sense of humour, and highlight my creativity and the work that I do. I have several for different areas of my business. Here’s my new favourite to help launch my new business, Artful Soul Arts.
